DAVID BERON (BFA, Acting, ’89) plays Roger in the Dogme95 feature film Reunion that is making the rounds of film festivals including the Avignon Film Festival in NYC last month. ALEX BLATT (BFA, Acting, ’96) was in a staged reading of Tell Me About Ireland, Talisman Theatre Company at the Mercury Theatre here in Chicago, in June. MICHAEL WOLLNER (MFA, Acting, ’98) was also in it. MICHAEL BODEEN (Faculty) and his partner ROB MILBURN (Faculty) created the original music for Chicago: A New Canvas, a 30 minute “sound and light show” for which the north façade of Chicago’s Field Museum has been turned into a huge screen. The music and lights accompany the words of Chicago legends Ben Hecht, George Pullman, Jane Addams, Louis Armstrong, Gwendolyn Brooks, Daniel Burnham and others, read by Chicago actors John Mahoney, Mike Nussbaum, Rondi Reed, Martha Lavey, Frank Galati and others. The show can be seen free of charge beginning at dusk, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through 9/1/01.
THOM BOWERS (MFA, Directing, ’01) has been hired as a FT faculty member at the Latin School here in Chicago. He’ll be teaching Acting and Speech Making, and directing one production a year beginning next month. NICK BOWLING (MFA, Directing, '96) directed a remounting of the Jeff Citation Award winning Eclipse Theatre Company production of Another Part of the Forest, Chicago’s Theatre on the Lake, closed 7/22/01. TIM BRAULT (Staff) was the technical director for In Real Life, About Face Youth Theatre, closed 7/22/01. GEOFF CURLEY (Faculty) designed the scenery. NICOLE ANNE BRYANT (BFA, Scene Design, ’92) was the lead scenic artist for the entire Soaring area and Pacific Wharf on Disney’s California Adventure in Anaheim, CA. Nicole also designed the pilot Ask Rita starring Rita Rudner, and Cooking with the Greats Las Vegas Style which will star famous guest chefs. JULIANNE BUESCHER (BFA, Acting, '89) plays Tennessee in the new Disney feature film The Country Bears, currently in production. She also plays Bree, Frances, and Marjorum on Disney's Weekenders, 7:30AM Saturdays on ABC, Nicole on Cousin Skeeter, Sundays at 5:30PM on Nickelodeon, and Monica on Jim Henson's Dinosaurs on the Disney channel. SCOTT COOPER (MFA, Scene Design, ’95) is the head of theatre at St. Petersburg College in St. Petersburg, FL. Scott is designing both sets and costumes for the shows this Fall, and will be directing later in the year. KELLY CRAVEN (BFA, Stage Management, ’97) lives outside Washington, D.C. and is the Associate Director of Council and Chapter Services at the American College of Radiology, the primary professional organization for radiologists in the U.S. Kelly’s responsibilities are primarily project development and program management for the 54 affiliated chapters and radiologists in residency. Kelly says it’s a lot like theatre, but her weekends are free(!) and radiologist don’t call, “Line”! Next month, Kelly will marry Nash Foster in Charlotte, NC. MIERKA GIRTEN (MFA Acting program, ’92-’93) was profiled in the 8/3/01 edition of PERFORMINK. Mierka was diagnosed with MS nine years ago and created a theatre collective called Mookie Jam, which raises funds to help benefit artists with MS and produced her one-woman show With or Without Wings, a crafting of Mierka’s journals into a humorous and unsentimental story of coping with MS in the middle or pursuing an acting career. The show ran for a month to sold out houses earlier this year at Victory Gardens Theatre. It will be remounted at Victory Gardens, 2257 N. Lincoln, 773/871-3000, 9/7/01 through 9/30/01. He is currently working on adapting another Caldecott Prize winning children’s book, Sector 7, for Paramount Pictures, and finishing up his latest play Semasiology. Jason is collaborating on a book and is currently in the middle of a 2 month research trip for it traveling to some isolated towns and villages throughout Asia, Eastern Europe and North Africa. He’ll end the trip on a different note by spending 2 weeks in Monte Carlo. TRACY HULTGREN (BFA, Acting, ’85) is the lead singer for the Chicago-based society orchestra The Rob Fund Orchestra. He has also been named to the board of Youth Theatre of New Jersey. This summer Scott worked at the Summer Theatre Institute at Columbia University in New York. This 5 week program is designed to give students a sample of conservatory training. Scott assisted with the final production, which is written each year based on the work developed during the classes. In addition, Scott has been named the Assistant Children’s Theatre Director at Theatre of Western Springs and Advisor for the High School Repertory Company. He will be directing Jungalbook at Theatre of Western Springs in November. Congratulations, Scott! BELLA ITKIN (MFA, Directing, ‘43 & Professor Emeritus) and her husband Frank Konrath celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on 7/29/01. GRANT JAMES (BFA, Acting, ’62) gave us a few of the independent films he’s been in. They include Summer Job, Numbers, Arnie’s Bottomless Cup, Flowers Grown From Powdered Bones, Finding Love, and the feature film, American Generator. He recently signed on as a regular voice for the cartoon series Soul Hunter which is still in production. GENE JANSON (BFA, Acting, ’58) serves on the Artistic Board for the Apple Tree theatre in Highland Park, IL. KATIE JEEP (BFA, Acting, '00) has been accepted into the one-year postgraduate degree program of the Webber Douglas Academy of the Dramatic Arts in London. The school accepted only 8 students, Katie was one of two U. S. citizens accepted. She’ll leave for the program next month. The Theatre School and the School of Music deans, faculty and staff will kick off the school year once again with a BBQ Dinner on Thursday, 8/30/01 at the Sheridan Shores Yacht Club in Wilmette. NTOZAKE SHANGE (Faculty) joins The Theatre School for the 2001-2002 year in a visiting appointment in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Literature during MARTA EFFINGER's (Faculty) leave of absence. Perhaps most widely known as the author of for colored girls… (recipient of an Outer Critics' Circle Award, and Audelco and an Obie, along with Tony and Grammy nominations), some of her other work for the theatre includes spell #7, A Photograph: Lovers in Motion, an adaptation of Mother Courage and Her Children, and Nomathemba (co-authored with Eric Simonson and Joseph Shabala). She has also worked widely as an actress and director, as well as publishing poetry, novels and children's books. She has been commissioned for new work from theatres including the Public Theatre, New Federal Theatre and Rites and Reason Theatre. Ms. Shange comes to us from Prairie View A&M University near Houston TX, where she has been Associate Professor for Drama & English. She has taught at a number of other institutions, including College of New Jersey, Sonoma State College, Mils College, New York City College, Medger Evers University, Rice University, University of Houston, Villanova and the Maryland Institute College of Art. In addition to teaching the Dramaturgy 2 sequence, Ms. Shange will be teaching Theatre Studies electives and Sophomore Seminars in the Liberal Studies Program. Also joining the faculty this year are CLAUDIA ANDERSON (Full Time - Voice & Speech), DEXTER BULLARD (Full Time - Acting), SCOTT CONN (Adjunct - Construction & Rigging) and PAUL STOVALL (BFA, Acting, ’91) who will be directing an Introduction to Performance in the Fall Quarter 01-02. JASON BECK (BFA, Acting, ’98 & Staff) has been promoted to the position of Operations Manager; CHERYL LYNN BRUCE (Performance program) returns to us for the Fall Quarter 01-02 in a full time faculty position teaching two BFA3 Performance classes and directing an Introduction to Performance or a Workshop; TRUDIE KESSLER (Full Time - Voice & Speech) returns to us this year after a two year leave of absence, and KEVIN SNOW (BFA, Lighting Design, ’85) returns this year as a Visiting Assistant Professor and Head of the Lighting Design program News around DePaul University includes that Charwells College and University Dining Service began operating as DePaul’s food service vendor last month. Sodexho Marriott Services had been the vendor for the past twelve years. University President Reverend John P. Minogue announced the recipients of the 2001-02 Spirit of DePaul Awards (given to honor and recognize diverse members of the DePaul community for their leadership and service in the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul). The recipients are BOB JANIS (Vice President, Facility Operations), GLENNIS JONES-MARSHALL (Faculty Services Manager, College of Law), ROZANNE OWENS (Faculty, School of Education), LAZARUS RICE (Classroom Technology Services, Lincoln Park Campus), and LOTTIE PAVLINEC (Student Financial Accounts). Other DePaul University news includes the announcement that the university’s highly ranked part-time MBA program is slated to expand its international reach to Europe in January 2002, when it will premiere an 18 month MBA program in Prague. DePaul already has an established MBA program in Hong Kong. Last month, university president Reverend John P. Minogue, officially flipped the switch to shut down the university’s old mainframe computer system, which had been gradually supplanted over the last two years by the PeopleSoft system. For the third year in a row, DePaul University hosted the National Hispanic Institute leadership conference in July. A group of 206 Latino high school sophomores and juniors from around the country participated. Some building/construction updates: The shell of the new Student Center is now 95% complete (it’s on Belden between Sheffield and Kenmore - where Alumni Hall used to be). Interior work is moving along, furniture and equipment will be delivered between 10/22/01 & 11/9/01, building and food service staff will be in by mid-November, and it’s scheduled to be open for full use at the start of Winter Quarter 2001-02 this coming January. Landscaping and sidewalk outside the building is in process and the plan includes the reconstruction of the faculty/staff parking lot on the south side of the Center to be completed prior to the start of Fall Quarter 2001-02. A six-story visage of St. Vincent DePaul has been completed on the north and west walls of the McCabe residence hall on DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus. The 36 by 59 foot portrait can easily be viewed from the Fullerton elevated train platform. Eight DePaul Art students and Brother Mark Elder, an Art Department faculty member, completed the work last month. Work is also progressing on DePaul’s Barat Campus in Lake Forest including road repairs on campus; new fire alarm for Old Main; roofing, gutter and downspout replacements; new elevator tower for Old Main; painting, flooring, blackboard and screen upgrades in classrooms; additional network cabling in classrooms; cable tv and network cabling for all residence hall rooms; work related to putting into place a “visitor’s center” in Old Main; and much more. On a sad note, Goodman alums from the 1950’s LOUISE STUBBS WILLAMS and LARRY COLEMAN passed away recently. Everyone knows that Chicago is the greatest city in the U.S., and right

CCPA is a multi-venue entertainment complex at 777 N. Green Street which opened its doors in December 2000. It boasts a 350-seat main stage. Future expansion plans will include a 200-seat playhouse, two cabarets, a restaurant, an outdoor plaza and additional banquet space. This season Ina will be directing Painting Churches with sound design by JOE TECH HUPPERT (BFA, Theatre Studies, '04), The Substance of Fire starring RYAN KITLEY (MFA, Acting, '98) and ROHANNA DOYLIDA (BFA, Acting, '91), and Organic's co-production of Romeo and Juliet with Pickwick Theatre also starring RYAN KITLEY (MFA, Acting, '98).
