CHARLES ABBOTT (BFA, Acting, ‘61) is directing Elegy, produced by DENNIS GRIMALDI (BFA, Acting, ’68) this coming January at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. The play was written by RON HIRSEN (Staff).

ROB (ZENCHELSKY) ADLER (BFA, Acting, ’99) was the stage manager for Dish Babies, Two Roads Theatre, Studio City, CA, closed last month. STEVE HELLER (BFA, Acting, ’85) was in the cast.

TOM ALDREDGE (Acting, GSD) has a recurring role as Hugh DeAngelis (Carmella’s father) on The Sopranos, Sundays, HBO, 8PM.

KAREN ALDRIDGE (MFA, Acting, ’01) is playing Matilde, the female lead, in LeCostume, an adaptation of the short story written by Can Thimbe, directed by Peter Brook. The show rehearsed in Paris and is touring now through February 2002 in Ireland, England and Spain.

HEIDI AMOS (BFA, Theatre Studies, ’97) is relocating to Valparaiso, IN. Happy Trails!

CAMILLE ANDERSON (Staff) is leaving us as our Alumni Relations contact person as of 11/26/01. She will remain at DePaul, moving to the Development Office as its Planned Giving Director. Thanks for all your hard work for us, Camille!

CHRISTIAN ANDERSON (BFA Acting Program, 95-97) just finished performing in a remount of All’s Well That Ends Well, Southwest Shakespeare Festival, Mesa, AZ. GILLIAN ANDERSON (BFA, Acting, '90) plays FBI Agent Dana Scully on The X-Files, Sundays, FOX, 8PM. The show’s ninth season kicked off yesterday.

KEVIN ANDERSON (Cert, Acting, ’81) will play Frank Gifford in the TNT film Monday Night Mayhem, premiering 1/14/02, 7PM. Co-stars include John Turturo as Howard Cosell, Patti LuPone as Emmy Cosell, Brad Beyer as Don Meredith, Eli Wallach as Leonard Goldenson and ZAK ORTH (BFA, Acting, ’92) as Don Ohlmeyer.

MARTIN ANDREW (MFA, Scene Design, ’01) designed the set for From Both Hips, Mary-Arrchie Theatre, 731 W. Sheridan, 773/871-0442, through 12/16/01. Martin worked for the National High School Institute at Northwestern University Theatre Division this past summer. (See NOTES )

RICHARD BARLETTA (MFA, Directing, ’86) is the Artistic Director of the Griffin Theatre, 5404 N. Clark, 773/769-2228. He and Managing Director William Massolia were featured in a 10/19/01 Chicago READER article titled Serious Child’s Play. 60% of Griffin’s annual revenue comes from the productions they do for children both in their theatre and on tour. Two shows are touring nationally right now (There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom and Catherine, Called Birdy).

LARRY BATES (BFA, Acting, ’99) plays Petie Samples in FOX’s Boston Public, 7PM, Mondays. Larry will also be appearing again in A Christmas Carol, Cincinnati Playhouse, 962 Mt. TIM BRAULT (Staff) accepted the position of Technical Director at Chicago Shakespeare theatre here in Chicago. Tim was The Theatre School’s Technical Director since 1987; his last day with us was 10/28/01. The DePaulia Newspaper interviewed him in their 10/19/01 issue. We will miss Tim and wish him well in his new position.

W. EARL BROWN (MFA, Acting, ’89) is in the film Vanilla Sky, premiering 12/14/01, starring Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Kurt Russell, and Tara Lupinski; directed by Cameron Crow, the film is currently in post production.

JEFF BRUCKERHOFF (BFA, Lighting Design, ’94) is at the Santa Fe Opera where he is designing the lighting for H. M. S. Pinafore, opening 11/23/01. Next summer he’ll return to the Santa Fe Opera as the lighting director and will be going to Japan for two weeks with a production of Sly for the Washington Opera.

CHERYL LYNN BRUCE (Faculty) will direct From the Mississippi Delta, Congo Square Theatre Company, 1156 W. Grand #2R, 773/913-5808, opens 1/17/02 and runs through 2/16/02.

RUSS BRUZEK (GSD, Acting Program, ’61-’64) co-directed Live Radio Recreations of: “The Ghost of Benjamin Sweet”, “My Friend Irma - Seeing Ghosts”, and “Confessions of a House Painter”, AFTRA/SAG Senior Radio Players, Claudia Cassidy theatre in the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Randolph .

LINDA BUCHANAN (Faculty) is designing the scenery for Sister Carrie, Indiana Repertory Theatre, 140 W. Washington, Indianapolis, IN, 317/635-5252, opens 1/9/02 and runs through 2/2/02. She is also designing the scenery for House and Garden (which she did for the Goodman Theatre here in Chicago last year), The Alley Theatre (House in Alley Theatre Large Stage, Garden in Neuhaus Arena Stage), 615 Texas Ave, Houston, TX, 713/228-8421, opens 4/12/02 and runs through 5/12/02. Linda has also received a 2001 Jeff Award for Scenic Design for House, Goodman Theatre. Congratulations!

JULIANNE BUESCHER (BFA, Acting, '89) plays Tennessee in the new Disney feature film The Country Bears, currently in production. She also plays Bree, Frances, and Marjorum on Disney's Weekenders, 7:30AM Saturdays on ABC, Nicole on Cousin Skeeter, Sundays at 5:30PM on Nickelodeon, and Monica on Jim Henson's Dinosaurs on the Disney channel

 

DEXTER BULLARD (Faculty) is the Artistic Director of Plasticene Physical Theatre Company, which recently announced its season. Dexter will direct a remounting of Placticene’s 1997 critically acclaimed production Volume XII, Viaduct Theatre, 3111 N. Western, 312/409-0400, previews 12/6/01, opens 12/7/01 and runs through 12/16/01. SHARON GOPFERT (MFA, Acting, ’94) will be in the cast. Dexter will also be directing a world premiere, title TBA, Viaduct Theatre, 3111 N. Western, 312/409-0900, opens 2/21/02. Dexter taught a Plasticene Workshop this past Saturday, 11/10/01.

THOM BUMBLAUKAS (BFA, Scene Design, ’92) is designing the scenery for Marriage of Figaro at the Curtis Institute of Music, Rittenhouse Square, Center City Philadelphia, PA. Thom is also designing the scenery for Arsenic and Old Lace, Bristol Riverside Theatre, 120 Radcliffe St, Bristol, PA, 215/785-0100, opens 11/27/01 and runs through 12/16/01. He is also doing a new interactive show at The

Society Hill Playhouse, 507 S. 8th St, Philadelphia, PA, 215/923-0210. And he is painting on the film Signs, a Mel Gibson project starring Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix, currently in production.

E. FAYE BUTLER (BFA Acting program, ‘79-‘80) won a 2001 Jeff Award for Actress in a Revue for Could It Be Magic. Congratulations!

JOEL BUTLER (BFA, Production Management, ’97) is the stage manager for Blue Man Group, Briar Street Theatre, 3133 N. Halsted, 773/348-4000, open run.

P.J. BYRNE (MFA, Acting, '99) is in the Disney movie Max Keeble's Big Move. He will also appear in the film 29 Palms starring Chris O’Donnell and Bill Pullman, currently in post production.

PAULA (KOROLOGOS) CALE (BFA, Acting, ‘93) plays Joanie on Providence, Fridays, NBC, 7PM. Also starring on the show is CONCETTA TOMEI (BFA, Acting, ’75).

For The Theatre School, Nan will be designing costumes for our 2nd Chicago Playworks production, Selkie, opening 1/17/02. Nan will then take a Leave of Absence from DePaul during the Winter Quarter 01-02 to design the costumes for The Tempest, Chicago Shakespeare theatre, Navy Pier, 800 E. STEVE CINABRO (BFA, Acting, ’87) plays Gino in the film Hardball, starring Keanu Reeves and Diane Lane.

MARTIN CLARK (TIPPENS) (Directing program, ‘55-’56) plays Dr. George Junkin (father of Stonewall Jackson and once president of Washington University) in the TNT production of Gods and Generals, the second of a three part trilogy (Gettysburgh, G&G, and The Last Full Measure), which will be a feature film to be released in 2002. Filming was in Lexington, VA. Back home, he continues his activities with the Los Angeles Classical Theatre Lab.

KELLY COFFIELD (MFA, Acting, ’87) can be seen in the recurring role of Naomi on Once and Again with Sela Ward, Fridays, ABC, 9PM.

BEN COHEN (BFA, Theatre Technology, ’98 & Staff) got married on 10/27/01 and honeymooned with his new wife Linda in Costa Rica for a week.

ERIC CONLEY (BFA, Acting, ’95) is in the off-off-Broadway show El Salvador, Shurin Theatre, 311 West 43rd St., 6th Floor, NYC, 201/489-3308, through 11/25/01. Eric all just booked the lead in a independent feature film Under Surveillance, playing Justin Besler. Shooting starts 11/26/01.

LOU CONTEY (MFA, Directing, ’89) will direct Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, Shattered Globe Theatre, 2856 N. Halsted, 773/404-1237, opens 1/17/02 through 3/3/02.

DEAN CORRIN (Faculty) has written Battle of the Bands to be produced at Victory Gardens theatre, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave, 773/549-5788, opens 3/22/02 through 5/5/02.

STEPHEN DI BENEDETTO (BFA, Theatre Studies, ’93) is sharing an office with JIM JOHNSON (Former Faculty) at the University of Houston. Stephen is an Assistant Professor of Theatre History and Dramatic Criticism. Thank goodness he took good notes in Doc’s class!

KATRINA DICKENS (BFA, Dramaturgy/Criticism, ’97) is married, living in a Chicago suburb, and has two sons, Tristan and Rowan.

PAUL DILLON (BFA, Acting, '86) can be seen in the recurring role of Angelo on The Pretender, now in syndication on TNT, Mondays through Fridays, 6PM.

ROHANNA DOYLIDA (BFA, Acting, '91) will be in The Substance of Fire with RYAN KITLEY (MFA, Acting, '98), Organic Theatre, 1420 Maple Avenue, Evanston IL, 847/475-2800, 2/02 through 3/02. Substance will be directed by INA MARLOWE (MFA, Directing, '81).

JEFF DUDEK (BFA, Acting, ’89) directed Women Will Talk at the Loyola University Downtown Campus, 11/10/01.

SCOTT ELLIS (BFA, Acting, '78) will be directing Arthur Miller’s The Man Who Had All The Luck, starring Chris O’Donnell, at the Roundabout’s new space, the American Airlines Theatre, 227 W. 42nd St (between 7th & 8th), NYC, previews begin 4/19/02 and runs through 7/7/02. Scott will then direct The Boys From Syracuse, also at the American Airlines Theatre, scheduled to open 7/11/02.

JEN ELLISON (BFA, Acting, ’96) is the Artistic Director of WNEP Theatre. Jen wrote The Emily Show, directed by LISA VELTEN (BFA, Acting, ’98), WNEP Theatre, 3209 N. Halsted, 773/755-1693, through 12/1/01. Jen will also be directing Fugue, written by Jen and five others, including LISA VELTEN (BFA, Acting, ’98), also at WNEP, opening 4/11/02 and running through 5/18/02.

JOHN FERRICK (BFA, Acting, ’93) is in Return of the King, Lifeline Theatre, 6912 N. Glenwood, 773/761-4477, through 12/9/01. CINDY ORTHAL (BFA, Acting, ’84) is the puppet designer for the production.

JOEL FINK (BFA, Acting, ’71) is the Associate Dean and director of The Theatre Conservatory at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University.

MIA FIORELLA (BFA, Theatre Management, ’98) is currently working for The Noble Fool Theatre, 8 E. Randolph. KEVIN FOX (BFA, Acting, ’95) is a company member.

SHAWNA FLANIGAN (MFA, Directing, ’97) is the Urban Arts Director of the Center of Contemporary Arts in St. Louis, MO. It is a comprehensive arts center (theatre, dance, visual arts and music) where Shawna manages the programming for at-risk youth at six different locations in the city. Shawna’s son Kieran is a year old, doing well, walking and talking and all that other stuff that one year olds do.

KAREN FORT (BFA, Acting, ’78) directs Summer Brave, through 11/17/01, and Hamlet, opens 5/2/02 and runs through 5/5/02, Chase Park Theatre, 4701 N. Ashland, 312/742-4701.

KEITH FORT (MFA, Acting, ’78) will make his first acting appearance since 1982 in Sci-Fi Action Movie in Space Prison, Defiant Theatre, American Theatre Company, 1909 W. Byron, 773/929-1031, opens 12/8/01. Keith serves on the boards of Defiant theatre, Jellyeye Drum Theatre, and Illustrated Theatre. He is also still married to KAREN (ORENDURFF) FORT (BFA, Acting, ’78), and they have two children, both in high school.

KEVIN FOX (BFA, Acting, ’95) is in Widowers’ Houses, ShawChicago at Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington, 312/408-5605, through 11/26/01. Kevin is also in Flanagan’s Wake, Noble Fool theatre Co, 8 E. Randolph, 312/630-2631, open run. Kevin is a company member of Noble Fool theatre. On 11/21/01, they are having a benefit performance, The Laughs Are On Us, a five hour comedy marathon, 5-10PM, Noble Fool theatre, 8 E. Randolph. Though free, the performance will benefit the New York Police & Widows’ & Children’s Fund through the sale of raffle tickets. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

SUZANNE FRIEDLINE (MFA, Acting program, ’91-’92) did An Evening of Horton Foote, Tamarind Theatre, Hollywood, CA.

JOHN GEGENHUBER (BFA, Acting, ’84) plays the doctor in Earth 2, now in syndication on the SciFi cable channel, NOON, Sundays.

CHRIS GENEBACH (BFA, Acting, ’99) is in Women and Wallace, Backstage Theatre, Cornelia Arts Building, 1800 W. Cornelia, 312/683-5347, through 11/25/01.

BRIGID GERACE (MFA, Acting, 63-65) attended, along with LESLIE SHOOK (Staff) and ANNE WAKEFIELD (Faculty), the ITA’s Children’s Theatre Conference, 10/20/01. Rives Collins and Daniel J. Travanti were keynote speakers. Bridgid was on the noon panel discussion and spoke very highly of Chicago Playworks.

JEREMY GETZ (BFA, Lighting Design, ’99) designed the lighting for Rosemary, Prop Thtr at Victory Gardens Studio Theatre, closed yesterday.

LaCARES GREEN (BFA, Acting, ’01) plays Corporal Cobb in A Soldier’s Play, The Alkebu-Lan Cultural Center, 1435 N. Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, CA, 626/794-9577, through 11/18/01. He also recently shot a Big Red (gum) commercial.

JUDY (EVANS) GREER (BFA, Acting, ’97) will next be seen as Vicky in the yet to be released Adam Rifkin film Without Charlie. She will also be seen as Judy in the film In Memory of My Father, and as Alice in the Spike Jonze directed film Adaptation, along with Nicholas Cage and Meryl Streep.

PAUL GREGORY (BFA, Lighting Design, ’73) is the creative consultant for the Architectural Lighting Master Classes to be held in NYC, 2/21/02 & 2/22/02. Paul will lead a distinguished group of lighting designers in these master classes. The purpose is to train architects and lighting designers in the creative use of light to enhance their projects, and to help them compete successfully. For more information, contact Sonny Sonnenfeld at 212/769-2751. Paul also recently designed the lighting for the Chambers, a 77 room boutique hotel in midtown Manhattan. His work at the Chambers is featured in an article titled The Artful Lodger in the October 2001 issue of Lighting Dimensions on Architecture.

DENNIS GRIMALDI (BFA, Acting, ’68) is developing and producing a new Broadway musical comedy for Tony Award winner Chita Rivera. DANIEL (HENRY) MORAN (BFA, Acting, ’71) has accepted an appointment by President George W. Bush to serve as Executive Director of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. The Mid-America Arts Alliance Chairman, Art Thompson (President of the Cooper Foundation in Lincoln, Nebraska), announced Moran's pending resignation from his position there in order to accept Bush’s assignment. Under Moran's leadership beginning in the mid-1970s, Mid-America Arts Alliance has grown from an initial concept envisioned by a handful of civic leaders in the region to an organization responsible for creating, producing, touring, sponsoring, managing, or funding more than 600 arts organizations, artists, or museum exhibitions resulting in more than 12,000 different performances or events and generating over $232,000,000 in fiscal arts activity reaching over 28 million people. During his tenure, Mid-America Arts Alliance has created regional, multi-regional, national and international arts and humanities programs reaching all 50 states and more than 30 countries. Mid-America Arts Alliance also creates and manages programs involving education, community arts development, and the institutional advancement of arts organizations. JOHN C. REILLY (BFA, Acting, '87) plays Happy Jack in the Martin Scorcese film Gangs of New York, scheduled to be released on 12/21/01. Co-stars include Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day-Lewis. He will also appear in the film The Hours, with Nicole Kidman, Julieanne Moore, Meryl Streep and Ed Harris; and in the film The Good Girl with Jennifer Aniston. John is also scheduled to play the lead in a Broadway musical production of the 1955 Oscar winning film Marty. The plan is for the show to open on Broadway in the Spring or Fall of 2002.

TODD ROSENTHAL (Faculty) designed the set for A Christmas Carol, Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn, 312/443-3800, opens 11/17/01 and runs through 12/22/01. This is the first new set for the Goodman’s production of A Christmas Carol in over twenty years, celebrating a new season in a new space. We wish this set the same lasting longevity as its predecessor designed by JOE NIEMINSKI ( MFA, Scene Design, ’70 & Faculty) where it was used for over 20 seasons at the old Goodman Theatre. LAURA ROSS-WHITE (BFA, Acting, ’76) is an adjunct faculty member and teaches acting at Suffolk Community College in New York and is the Chair of the Fine Arts dept at the Knox School where she teaches acting and directing. Laura is a coordinator and director of the Oberon Foundation which brings performances and the arts to Long Island from Ray Anderson and Micahel Moschen.

NTOZAKE SHANGE (Faculty) will have her work celebrated with an afternoon of workshops and performances at DePaul on 1/21/02. On 10/27/01, Ntozake participated in the Gwendolyn Brooks International Literary Festival at U of I, Chicago, speaking on a panel about black artists. At the festival, she was inducted into the International Literary Hall of Fame for Writer’s of African Descent. From 11/1/01 to 11/4/01 Ntozake attended the “Acts of Achievement” event in Birmingham, England, performing Ellington Is Not A Street, and a new piece entitled The Lizard Project, with choreographer Mickey Davidson. LILY SHAW (BFA, Acting, ’95) was featured in Clean at the Chicago Underground Film Festival. Lily also finished the independent film connect the dots. She is also doing press relations for Naked Eye Theatre Company and CollaborAction Theatre Company. LESLIE SHOOK (Staff & Faculty) has loaned some of her personal collection of Alice memorabilia for three exhibits that the university has promoting Alice in Wonderland, our currently playing Chicago Playworks production. Alice in DePaul-land is on the first floor of DePaul’s Richardson Library on the Lincoln Park campus. Chicago Playworks is an exhibit on the 10th floor of DePaul Center on the downtown campus, highlighting the more than 75 year history of the children's theatre. And our current production of Alice in Wonderland is featured in the display case located in the Merle Reskin Theatre's lower lobby. Special thanks to Kathryn DeGraff of DePaul University Special Collections Dept for coordinating these exhibits, on display through 12/7/01. Leslie attended, along with ANNE WAKEFIELD (Faculty), the ITA’s Children’s Theatre Conference, 10/20. Rives Collins and Daniel J. Travanti were keynote speakers. BRIGID GERACE (MFA, Acting, 63-65) was on the noon panel discussion and spoke very highly of Chicago Playworks.

RACHEL SHTEIR (Faculty) is dramaturging the Target Margin Theatre’s production of The Marriage of Figaro, in NYC, 212/358-3657, through 11/17/01. She will be collaborating with LISA PORTES (Faculty) on a workshop of a new adaptation of Theodore Dreiser’s Sister Carrie at Lookingglass Theatre this coming Spring. MATT SMITH (BFA, Acting, ’91) just filmed seven new spots for Bud Light that will air in the U.S. (Matt lives in Canada). Look for him as a small town hockey fan with a mullet (hair extensions, he claims….) Matt continues to do voiceover work for several cartoons.

STEVE SMITH (BFA, Acting, ’77) is currently in Finland directing some shows for the newest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet.

TAIT SMITH (BFA, Acting, ’97) plays Hansie in the MGM/United Artists feature film Pumpkin. Co-stars include Christina Ricci and Brenda Blevin.

BEN SPICER (BFA, Light Design, ’01) traveled to Europe soon after graduation. Ben spent all of July and half of August as the lighting designer and technical tour advisor for a touring production in The Netherlands of Dubaten Koorts (translates to Gold Fever) with the De Smederij (The Foundry) Theatre Company. When Ben returns to the states, he’ll be designing the lighting for La Luna Muda with Lookingglass Theatre Company, opening in February 2002; Ben will also be teaching the design class at the Lookingglass Studio beginning in January of 2002.

BRIA CONRADUS (BFA, Acting, ’87) passed away on 10/21/01 in Seattle, WA. Bria had a brain tumor removed through surgery in September of 1995, followed by chemotherapy. Her illness returned in the late summer this year. Bria was an only child; both of her parents passed away in 1996. Memorials should be made to the charity of your choice.

The Theatre Arts program at the Barat Campus of DePaul University opens its 2001-02 Children’s Theatre season with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, directed by HOLLY ORFANEDES-ROTH (Barat Faculty). The show will play twice a day, Tuesday through Friday, 11/27/01 through 11/30/01 for school groups, and to the general public twice a day on Saturday and Sunday, 12/1/01 and 12/2/01, 1PM & 4PM. WAYNE SMITH (Staff) is now serving as Interim Technical Director for The Theatre School. He took on this position beginning 10/22/01. We anticipate that the Technical Director search will be concluded by 3/31/02. We will also be hiring an interim Properties Master to be responsible for Wayne’s current duties. Wayne has been our Property Master since 1982. During his tenure with us, he has worked in a number of shop facilities (the shared Grant Place facility with the Goodman Theatre, the Lyceum building on Sheffield, and our current space). He has produced props for over 190 of our productions in the last 19 years, and has worked closely with Tim Brault and Gerry Reynolds during that time. Wayne has a B.A. in Technical Theatre and Design from U of I Champaign/Urbana; has worked for Goodman, Court, and Chicago Children’s Theatre; and is an active member of USITT, having hosted a Midwest section workshop here in 1996 titled, “Blood and Guts, Fire and Brimstone.” Wayne is our Safety Officer, has re-written its handbook twice now, and is certified in Hazard Communications. He is in his second term on the DePaul University Staff Council, currently chairs its Communications Committee, and chaired the 2000 DePaul University Picnic Planning Committee.

DINA LINDENBERG (Staff) joins us this month as our DePaul Alumni Relations & Networks contact person. Dina has a BA in English from the U of Virginia and just finished an MA in Public Service here at DePaul. Dina is from the Chicago suburbs and has worked in the alumni offices for three years. She is currently an Assistant Director, and responsible for The Theatre School, the School of Music, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and the Young Alumni Association. In addition to being a supporter of the schools of DePaul, she is a Chicago Bears fan and is predicting their appearance in the Super Bowl this year. We welcome Dina and all her dreams!

Guidelines for the awarding of the annual Cunningham Prize (created in 1991) have been revised to create a new Cunningham Commission for Youth Theatre. This year’s deadline is 12/1/01 (for future years it will be 10/1). The commission encourages Chicago-area playwrights (defined as having their residence within 100 miles of the Chicago Loop) to write for an audience they may not previously have considered - youth. The importance and prominence of theatre for youth is rising across the nation as many leading theatres dedicate resources to young audiences. In celebration of the residency of Visiting Professor NTOZAKE SHANGE (Faculty) the Executive Committee at The Theatre School is pleased to announce an afternoon of workshops and performances featuring her work. This will take place on Monday, 1/21/02 in conjunction with the university’s observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Theatre School classes after noon that day will be canceled so that all students, faculty and staff may attend. The programs will run from 1-5PM. All Theatre School students will be required to attend unless the workshop conflicts with courses in other schools of the university. In addition to performances by Dr. Shange, the day will include workshops led by Theatre School faculty, other DePaul faculty and guests from the community. These sessions will explore Dr. Shange’s work and examine issues of diversity and multi-culturalism. Everyone will be expected to prepare for this day by reading a selection of Dr. Shange’s work. The featured works will be for colored girls…, spell #7 and love/space/demands. Copies will be available at Act One Bookstore before the end of the fall quarter. In addition, a study guide prepared by the Dramaturgy classes will be distributed to The Theatre School community before the break. The committee organizing this afternoon includes DEAN CORRIN (Faculty), LARA GOETSCH (Staff), PHYLLIS GRIFFIN (Faculty), CHRIS JONES (Faculty), and RACHEL SHTEIR (Faculty). They invite the participation of anyone interested in helping to plan this event. This committee and The Theatre School are also planning other events that will introduce Dr. Shange to the wider DePaul and Chicago communities.

News elsewhere at DePaul includes : U.S. News and World Report names three DePaul University programs among the Top 10 in the country. The Kellstadt Graduate School of Business part-time MBA program is ranked #4 in the nation, and the College of Law’s Intellectual Property program is rated #6. The College of Law’s Health Law program is ranked in the Top 10, as well. Hispanic Magazine again ranks DePaul in the top 25 colleges and universities for Latino/a students. Besides enrollment and retention figures, the magazine also considers academic excellence, Latino/a-related degree programs, Hispanic student organizations and support programs and Hispanic faculty. Success Magazine rates the entrepreneurship program at the Kellstadt Graduate School of Business as fourth in the top 50 entrepreneurial business school programs. DePaul’s athletics department achieved a milestone during the 2000-01 academic year. For the first time in school history, the university was represented in three different spring NCAA tournaments. DePaul’s women’s softball team qualified for the NCAA tournament for the fifth straight year, Carey Ryan qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the hammer throw for the second straight year, and Jevgenij Cariov became the first DePaul men’s tennis player in more than 30 years to earn a spot in the NCAA singles tournament.

The official total enrollment for DePaul this year is 21,364. That’s a 4% increase over last year. Since 1996, DePaul’s total enrollment has grown 24%. DePaul remains the largest Catholic university in the country. This year’s freshman class is the most diverse in the university’s history with minority students representing 33% of the class. The Theatre School has a total enrollment of 315. We make up 1.5% of the university’s student body.

CTI (School of Computer Science, Telecommunications, and Information Services) introduced the Center for Community Technology Support this fall. The center will provide on-going maintenance for software that has been developed by CTI students for outside organizations, in particular non-profits. The center will coordinate efforts and act as a single contact point for students, and faculty teaching the courses and the organizations that will benefit from the students’ services. In the past, students have developed software for non-profit organizations, such as Youth Service Project, Association House and STRIVE, a program that helps adults enter the workplace. CTI hopes to hire two graduate students and two undergraduate students who will write software, troubleshoot, develop Web sites, and install and maintain networks. The service will be free to non-profit organizations.

The brand new set design is by TODD ROSENTHAL (Faculty). This is the first new set for the Goodman’s production of A Christmas Carol in over twenty years, celebrating a new season in a new space. We wish this set the same lasting longevity as its predecessor designed by JOE NIEMINSKI (Faculty).

INA MARLOWE (MFA, Directing, '81) is the Producing Artistic Director of the Organic Theatre Company, which recently announced its 2001-2002 season. This season Ina will be directing Painting Churches with sound design by JOE TECH HUPPERT (BFA, Theatre Studies, '04), The Substance of Fire starring RYAN KITLEY (MFA, Acting, '98) and ROHANNA DOYLIDA (BFA, Acting, '91), and Organic's co-production of Romeo and Juliet with Pickwick Theatre also starring RYAN KITLEY (MFA, Acting, '98). Churches and Fire will play at The Theatre, 1420 Maple Avenue, Evanston IL, 847/475-2800, and R & J will play at the Pickwick Theatre, 5 S. Prospect, Park Ridge IL, 847/692-6590.

Keyhole Players, started by FRANK MERLE (BFA, Playwriting, ’01) and MATTHEW DAVID (BFA, Playwriting, ’01), held their first benefit on Halloween night. KATE MURA (BFA, Acting, ’01) appeared in Hogtown Horrors, the 1-act Halloween show that was the main event at this benefit. Other Keyhole staff members include LIBBY FORD (BFA, Theatre Studies, ’03), JEFF SCHLEGELMILCH (BFA, Theatre Studies, ’03), and MORGAN LEAVITT (BFA, Theatre Studies, ’03). RACHEL SHTEIR (Faculty) is on the Keyhole Board of Directors.

GREG BLOXHAM (BFA, Lighting Design, ’02), COLLETT POLLARD (BFA, Scene Design, ’01), MARTIN ANDREW (MFA, Scene Design, ’01), PATRICK JUSTICE (BFA, Theatre Technology, ’02), ERICA HEMMINGER (MFA, Scene Design, ’03), and ANN DETMER (BFA, Costume Design, ’04) worked for the National High School Institute at Northwestern University Theatre Division (nicknamed cherubs) this summer. They worked with 160 high school students from all over the US, gave a host of classes, and produced 10 shows in 5 weeks.
