Elsewhere At DePaul:
Since 1998, DePaul has been the largest Catholic university in the United States. Based on Fall 2000 data, DePaul moved to a new status as the ninth largest private university in the country. The eight schools larger than DePaul University form an impressive group: New York University, Brigham Young University, Boston University, Southern Cal, Harvard, Northeastern (Boston), University of Pennsylvania and Columbia in New York. Right behind DePaul University is Syracuse University. In the Fall of 2000, DePaul welcomed their largest first year class ever and, for the first time in DePaul’s history, they had to close admissions and establish a waiting list. During a two- year period, the college’s first year entering class has increased by more than 42 percent.

The sophisticated technology of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have made it possible to bring awesome images of planets and galaxies into the classroom. Bernhard Beck-Winchatz, an astronomer and faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, wanted visually impaired students to have the same opportunities to engage themselves in space science. With the help of astronomer and author Noreen Grice, he has developed a much-needed space science resource book for the blind. Using $10,000 HST grant earmarked for educational programs, Beck-Winchatz and Grice created a large print, Braille book that combines tactile illustrations with colorful images taken with the HST. The book, Touch the Universe: A NASA Braille Book of Astronomy, includes spectacular images of planets, start clusters and nebulae. For more information about this project or to order a copy of Touch the Universe contact Bernhard Beck-Winchatz by e-mail at < bbeck@condor.depaul.edu or by phone at (773) 325-4545.
